Authorities confirmed that the death toll rose to nine on Aug. 8 after a hospitalized victim succumbed to her injuries, one day after a teenage gunman carried out a coordinated assault at a secondary school in Nonthaburi, Thailand. The 12-year-old girl who died had been hospitalized following the rampage, which unfolded on Aug. 7, 2026.
The 14-year-old shooter killed his two grandparents at their residence before traveling to Debsirin School, where he murdered five staff members and later fatally shot himself. More than 20 individuals sustained injuries, with 14 remaining under hospital care and seven listed in critical condition, officials reported.
Gunman Methodically Targeted Victims
Forensic analysis revealed precise targeting by the assailant, according to national police chief Gen. Kittiratt Phanphet, who noted that multiple rounds struck vital organs. The teenager discharged more than 20 shots during the assault and retained over 30 additional bullets when he ended his own life, authorities confirmed.
Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul characterized the violence as “well prepared” with “clear steps and clear goals,” observing the attacker still possessed “more than 30” rounds when he took his own life. The firearm belonged to the boy’s grandfather, police stated, with no indication it was acquired unlawfully. After lessons commenced, he discharged his weapon inside his classroom, then exited into hallways where he stalked between rooms continuing the assault. Prime Minister Anutin pledged to advance fresh legislation limiting gun-carrying privileges solely to on-duty government personnel. He voiced anguish and shock over the tragedy. “I don’t just feel sorry for the victims, but I feel sorry that this happened,” Anutin said. “How can this happen in our country?”
